Making Connections: Visiting Murashky

VfU Board member Nicholas McCurrach visits volunteer kitchen "Murashky (Мурашки)" in Kyiv, Ukraine

This June 2026, one of our board members, Nicholas McCurrach, visited a well-known volunteer kitchen “Murashky” (Cyrillic Мурашки) The name translates to “Ants” in english; referring to the strength and cooperation of worker ants who can make such huge impact together, despite their individual size. The kitchen makes MREs for soldiers on the frontlines. The food only requires hot water; so it gets dropped by drones to units in the most difficult battlefield positions.

Nicholas was accompanied by long time friend and fellow volunteer. While there, they assisted in hauling food up 2 floors from the basement to the kitchen, and processing potatoes. The potatoes are used in a wide variety of meals.
